Which decking timber is best for Sydney's climate?

For Sydney’s hot, humid summers and mild winters, we generally recommend Merbau, Blackbutt, or Grey Ironbark. Merbau is the most popular choice; it handles moisture and UV extremely well, is naturally resistant to termites, and its rich tones hold up beautifully over time. Blackbutt is excellent for coastal properties due to its resistance to salt air.

How long does hardwood decking last?

A well-built, properly maintained hardwood deck can last 25 to 50 years or more. Species like Ironbark and Jarrah are so dense they can outlast the structures they’re attached to. The key is annual oiling and keeping drainage clear so water doesn’t pool under or between boards.

Do I need council approval for a deck in Sydney?

It depends on the size and height of the deck. Many ground-level decks under a certain area can be built under exempt development (no DA required). Elevated decks or larger structures typically need a Development Application or at minimum a Complying Development Certificate. We can advise based on your specific council area when we come out for the measure.

How often do I need to oil my timber deck?

Generally, once a year, before summer. For decks in full sun or near the coast, twice a year is better. You’ll know it’s time when water stops beading on the surface and soaks in instead. We recommend a quality penetrating oil (not a surface film sealer) as it lasts longer and is easier to reapply without stripping.

My old deck is looking weathered. Can it be restored?

In most cases, yes. Hardwood decks that have greyed or weathered can usually be brought back to life by sanding back the surface and applying fresh oil or sealer. As long as the structural timbers are sound, you don’t need to replace the whole deck. Call us and we can assess whether a restoration is the right call or whether replacement makes more sense long-term.
