What is Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba)?
Brazilian Cherry, also known by its trade name Jatoba, is an exotic hardwood species originating from South America—primarily Brazil.
Key characteristics:
- Colour: Freshly milled, the wood can appear tan, salmon or light red-brown, but it naturally darkens over time (especially with exposure to light) into a deep, rich reddish-brown.
- Grain & texture: Typically a straight to interlocked grain with medium to coarse texture and natural variation/streaks.

Grades
Jatoba flooring may be supplied under different grading systems depending on the manufacturer. The grade describes the appearance of the boards, including knots, sapwood, colour variation and natural markings. It does not necessarily indicate a difference in the timber’s overall strength.
Clear Grade
Clear Grade provides the cleanest and most consistent appearance. Boards are generally selected for rich heartwood colour with minimal knots, sapwood and natural markings.
This grade is suitable for interiors where a refined and relatively uniform reddish-brown floor is preferred. Clear Grade is commonly offered for Brazilian Cherry flooring.
Select Grade
Select Grade offers a clean appearance while allowing some natural variation. Boards may include small sound knots, subtle colour changes, minor sapwood and occasional natural markings.
It is a suitable choice for homeowners who want a polished finish while retaining some of Jatoba’s natural character.
Select or Classic Grade
Some manufacturers combine cleaner boards with boards containing more visible natural features under a Select or Classic classification. This grade may include colour variation, occasional knots, sapwood, filled features and minor checks.
Standard Grade
Standard Grade provides a greater level of natural character. It may include moderate colour variation, small knots, mineral streaks, darker grain lines and limited sapwood.
This grade creates a warm and naturally varied floor without appearing heavily rustic.
Character Grade
Character Grade highlights Jatoba’s natural variation. Boards may display more frequent knots, sapwood, darker streaks, grain changes and other naturally occurring features.
It is suitable for interiors where a more expressive and individual timber floor is desired.
Common Grade
Common Grade may contain stronger colour variation, a greater amount of sapwood, knots and visible natural markings. It generally creates a more varied and rustic appearance.
Some suppliers use terms such as Number 1 Common or Mountain Grade instead of Standard or Character Grade.
