Engineered Flooring Sydney

Engineered timber flooring is made of real wood on top, with layers of timber underneath. The layers are glued together in different directions, which makes it strong and stable. It looks like solid wood but handles changes in temperature and humidity much better.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Engineered Flooring?

Feature Description
Handles moisture better The cross-ply core resists expansion and contraction — safe in kitchens, laundries, and over concrete slabs. Perfect for Apartments.
Works over underfloor heating More dimensionally stable than solid timber under temperature cycling. Our preferred choice for hydronic systems.
Glue-down or floating Can be glued directly to concrete or floated over existing subfloors, with fewer prep requirements than solid.
Looks identical to solid timber The surface is real hardwood — guests won’t know the difference. Same grain, same warmth, same character.
Can be re-sanded A 3mm+ wear layer means you can sand and refinish 1–2 times over its lifetime, unlike hybrid or laminate.
Wide plank options Engineered construction allows wider, longer planks that would be too unstable in solid timber format.

Where does engineered timber work best?

Living Room, Dining Room, Bedroom, Apartment, Hallway.
Not recommended for bathrooms, laundries, or areas with standing water.

Is it real timber? How is it different from laminate?

Yes, the surface is real hardwood timber. Laminate is a printed photograph of timber covered in a hard plastic layer, there is no real wood in laminate. Engineered timber, by contrast, has a genuine hardwood wear layer. You can feel the difference, sand it back, and refinish it. You cannot do any of that with laminate.

Can engineered timber be installed over a concrete slab?

Yes, this is one of the main reasons people choose engineered over solid timber. It can be glued directly to a concrete slab using a suitable adhesive, provided moisture levels in the concrete are within acceptable range. We check this when we come out for the free measure.

How long does installation take?

Most standard rooms can be completed in a day. Floating installation is quicker; glue-down installations require an adhesive curing period before the floor can be used. We’ll give you a specific timeline in your quote based on your subfloor type and room size.

Is it suitable for apartments and strata buildings?

Yes, engineered timber with a floating installation is one of the most common floor choices for apartments. It sits on top of the subfloor without being fixed to it, which reduces sound transmission between floors. Check your strata by-laws for any specific acoustic underlay requirements and we can factor those in.

How does it compare in price to solid timber?

Product cost is broadly similar, sometimes slightly less than solid, sometimes slightly more depending on the species and wear layer thickness. Where engineered saves money is installation: no separate sand-and-polish visit is needed for prefinished ranges, and subfloor prep is generally simpler. Call us for a side-by-side quote.
