What is Brazilian Teak (Cumaru)?
Brazilian Teak, commonly marketed as Cumaru, is an exotic hardwood species native to South America (Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Costa Rica).
Key characteristics include:
- Colour: A rich palette ranging from light golden‐brown and honey to deep reddish-brown and occasionally with darker striping or variation.
- Grain & texture: Often interlocked or wavy grain, medium to coarse texture.
- Hardness/density: Extremely hard species, Janka hardness rating around 3,540 lbf (~15,750 N) in some sources.
- Durability: Suitable for heavy-use flooring environments thanks to its natural resilience and density.
Despite the name “teak”, it is not the true teak species (Tectona grandis), but it shares many high-performance traits.

Grades
Cumaru flooring may be available in different visual grades. The grade describes the appearance of the boards, including colour variation, knots and natural markings. It does not necessarily indicate a difference in the timber’s basic strength.
Select Grade
Select Grade provides a cleaner and more consistent appearance. Boards generally contain minimal knots and natural markings, with controlled variation in colour and grain.
This grade is suitable for modern interiors where a smooth, refined and more uniform timber floor is preferred.
Standard Grade
Standard Grade offers a balance between consistency and natural character. It may include moderate colour variation, small sound knots, darker streaks and natural grain changes.
This option is ideal for homeowners who want the rich appearance of Cumaru while retaining some of the timber’s natural variation.
Feature Grade
Feature Grade displays more visible natural character, including stronger colour changes, knots, mineral streaks, grain variation and other naturally occurring markings.
It is well suited to interiors where a bold, rustic or highly individual timber floor is desired.
Clear Grade
Some Cumaru suppliers use the term Clear Grade instead of Select Grade. Clear Grade is generally chosen for colour consistency and minimal visible defects or feature markings.
