Kempas Natural Timber Floor
Kempas Natural Timber Floor
What Is Kempas?
Kempas (botanical name Koompassia malaccensis, sometimes used generically for the genus) is a dense, exotic hardwood species native to Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Indonesia, etc.).
It features a heartwood that ranges from pinkish when freshly cut to a deeper orange-brown or reddish-brown as it ages/exposes to light.
Why Choose Kempas for Solid Timber Flooring?
Kempas is significantly harder than many standard hardwoods
- Faster installation and move-in readiness
- Less mess on site (no dust from sanding or wet coatings)
- More consistent finish quality and factory-controlled coatings.
- A rich, warm aesthetic: orange, cinnamon, reddish-brown. Over time, the colour deepens slightly. Its exotic character makes it a premium-looking choice.

Grades
Kempas Natural flooring may be supplied under different grading terms depending on the manufacturer. The grade describes the visible colour variation, knots, sapwood and natural markings within the boards.
Select Grade
Select Grade provides a cleaner and more consistent appearance. Boards generally contain fewer knots and natural markings, although some variation in colour and grain remains.
This grade is suitable for contemporary interiors where a smoother and more uniform reddish timber floor is preferred.
Standard Grade
Standard Grade allows more of the timber’s natural character to remain visible. Boards may contain moderate colour variation, darker grain lines, small knots and changes in grain direction.
It is suitable for homeowners who want a natural hardwood appearance without a heavily rustic finish.
Select to Standard Grade
Some Kempas flooring ranges combine Select and Standard Grade boards. This creates a balanced appearance with generally clean boards alongside controlled natural colour and grain variation.
Kempas flooring is commonly offered in a Select to Standard Grade combination.
Select and Better Grade
Select and Better Grade generally contains Select Grade boards together with cleaner boards that meet a higher visual standard. It offers limited natural markings while retaining the species’ characteristic colour variation.
Prefinished Kempas flooring is also available from some manufacturers in Select and Better Grade.
Character or Common Grade
Character or Common Grade may contain stronger colour variation, sapwood, knots, grain changes and other natural features. It creates a more varied and expressive floor.
Availability is more limited than Select or Standard Grade and should be confirmed before purchase.
Please note: Kempas grading terminology is not standardised across all flooring manufacturers. Current grades and allowable natural features should be confirmed with Sydney Timber Flooring.
